Nina Goes to Vcon

I'm going to be a panelist and doing several readings at Vcon, Vancouver's prime science fiction, fantasy and gaming convention, held at the Compass Point Inn (9850 King George Highway, Surrey, BC, Canada V3T 4Y3) on October 3 to 5, 2008.

I'm not sure if you remember how much fun I had at last year's Vcon but this year they've decided to curtail my mischievous loitering in the hallways (okay, and in the bars) by assigning me to a bazillion panels. That's okay, because I like panels. And between you and me, I can do just as much mischief there... (sly grin).

I'll be doing panels on the following topics:

  • Is technology replacing ideology as the driving force in human events?--Friday

  • Growing SFF/Romance crossover market--Friday

  • Is the scientific method the death of God?--Friday

  • Blogs and the media--Saturday

  • Crafting a good sex scene and/or a good battle scene--Saturday

  • Artificial intellegence and robotics in SF and reality--Sunday

  • Beginnings, middles and ends: the challenges of longer forms--Sunday

  • Canadian SF--what distinguishes it?--Sunday

I'm also doing several readings on Saturday in addition to an autograph session and talking about my "Alien Guide" series with Pixl Press, including The Fiction Writer: Get Published, Write Now! to be released this December.
If you live in Vancouver or just visiting, I'd love to see you at the con.
For more information on the convention, check out the Vcon website.

Look forward to seeing you there and doing some socializing, Nina. I need time off from things work for good behavior. :-)

That looks SO good, Nina. Wish I could go there.

Coolio, Lynda! I may have to crash in someone's room (intend to do some serious partying there--isn't that what conventions are for?LOL!) It'll be great to see you again and chat about all your neat book projects with Edge and elsewhere!

Jean-luc... I so wish you could make it too! You need to convince the Federation to give you some shore-leave and come out to British Columbia some time. You know, we have some wonderful vineyards here. You could do a great roadtrip of tastings Picard-style...

Hi SF!

How did it go? Details!

I'm sorry I couldn't make it. =\
I had a deadline on a personal project that took me right through til Sunday night... and I'm starting to feel the hibernating instinct kicking in.

But more importantly... was it good?

It was a blast, Blackburn! Only, I'm suffering for it today, I'm afraid... lost my voice (LOL! Too much talking, laughing and ... well, we'll leave it at that :) Sorry you couldn't make it, but I certainly understand deadlines (I work with them all the time as an environmental consultant and a writer). Perhaps, we'll see you there next year?...

I met you at VCon and I am curious, when and where is your next book signing in B.C ?

Nina Munteanu said...

Joe, I'm doing a few signings at various Chapters stores in the next two months. The first one will be sometime in late October at Chapters in Metrotown and the next in Chapters Coquitlam in early to mid-November. As soon as I find out the specific dates I'll post it here. Thanks for your interest. I look forward to seeing you!

You might be interested in a small local event closer to where I'm from (Delta). The Ladner Pioneer Library is hosting a local writers getogether on October 25th. Check out the booktour widget on my blog sidebar for details.

p.s. Oh, and Blackburn... you'll be getting the details of Nina's Vcon experience soon. I'm waiting for some pictures first! I'm not very good at taking shots when I'm actively pontificating or actively drinking or both (LOL!)... :)

And as usual ... saw more of people on panels than off them, it seems! There was that one nice visit in the pub but somehow we sort of broke into two sets of two, didn't we? Me talking to Craig and you to Donna Farley. In another life, I would have loved to study conversational dynamics. You did a great job moderating, by the way. Not in the pub - at the panels we shared. :-)

Nina Munteanu said...

LOL! So, my moderating at the pub was that seamless, eh?... LOL! Sure was fun sharing panels with you, Lynda. We did a good job getting them all riled up, I think. :) ... Lynda Williams is the author of the awesome Okal Rel Universe series published by Edge.

Lynda said...

Riled up? Yes, I guess so. I used to be such a mild-mannered creature. More opinionated as a age and write. :-)

Nina Munteanu said...

Yes.... I know what you mean. Age has a way of freeing us. I find that as I get older, I'm less likely to be intimidated by what others think... getting more existentialist in my old age... :)

I like that you are OUT THERE with your opinions and not afraid to get into a scuffle with other big names, Lynda. Kudos, gal! Or was it all those gin and tonics we had at the bar before?... (just kidding!)

Lynda said...

The beer helps. :-) Especially when elevator speaches are required.

Nina Munteanu said...

HAHA! Beer has a wonderful way of helping with a lot of things! See you at World Fantasy Con, Lynda! You ARE coming?...

Lynda said...

Plan to. And should certainly be able to socialize since I never got my act together to get onto the program. Might be a good thing.

Nina Munteanu said...

Me neither, though I think I am doing some readings... Let's make sure we check out the bar together! :)

You're on.
